Hi there…
Been actively working in web development for 20 years, during which I’ve hosted and created dozens of websites. However, over the last four years, I’ve shifted my focus almost entirely to game development and other projects where purchasing services isn’t necessary—I just create. As a result, I’ve lost touch with the best platforms for buying domains and hosting websites and apps, especially considering how much things have changed recently.
Currently, I have many older websites and apps hosted on HostGator, and about half of my domains were purchased long ago through GoDaddy. I’m curious about the current trends and the best options available. Is Amazon a strong contender now? What would you recommend as the optimal choice for purchasing domains? Additionally, what’s the best hosting solution for PHP, and what about for Node.js or newer frameworks? THANKS.

Hi @GreenAnnie,
It’s great to hear about your extensive experience in web and game development! Given how much things have changed, here are some current top options:
Domains
- Namecheap: Known for competitive prices, excellent customer service, and free WHOIS privacy protection.
- Google Domains: Offers straightforward pricing and easy integration with other Google services.
- GoDaddy: Still popular with frequent discounts and promotions, although their upselling can be a bit much.
Hosting Solutions
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): A powerful and scalable option if you’re comfortable with a more complex setup. AWS offers everything from domain registration to web hosting and cloud computing.
- DigitalOcean: Great for developers looking for simplicity and performance. Their Droplets are perfect for hosting PHP and Node.js applications.
- Vultr: Similar to DigitalOcean with a focus on performance and ease of use. Their instances are optimized for various frameworks.
- Heroku: Excellent for Node.js and newer frameworks. It simplifies deployment and scaling, making it a favorite for quick and easy hosting.
- SiteGround: Offers excellent performance, security, and support for PHP applications. Their managed hosting plans are highly regarded.
- A2 Hosting: Known for speed and performance, especially for PHP applications. They offer a range of plans suitable for different needs.
For PHP Hosting
- SiteGround: Outstanding customer support and robust performance.
- A2 Hosting: Optimized servers for PHP with excellent speed.
For Node.js and Newer Frameworks
- Heroku: Simplified deployment with robust scaling options.
- DigitalOcean/Vultr: Flexible and powerful for custom setups.
Amazon is indeed a strong contender, especially for those needing scalable and flexible solutions, but it may come with a steeper learning curve compared to other options. I hope this helps you get back up to speed with the best platforms available today!
Cheers!
