What is the most value cloud hosting service for ~$5?

I’m interested in deploying my backend and there seems to be many options. I’m wondering what the most value I can get out of ~$5 a month.

I’m also partially interested in learning how to deploy applications, so a learning curve is fine with me rather than just relying on a PaaS to do everything.

A Hetzner VPS is pretty good for this kind of thing. About $5.74 a month for the 2 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB disk option with 1 TB traffic.

Hetzner is go-to for everything, cheap and efficient. Currently deploy using Docker Compose and GitHub Actions.

+1 for Hetzner. Great specs for the price and solid network. I’ve been running stuff there for months without issues.

As long as you’re okay with grumpy recalcitrant Germans for tech support.

@Pippin
You should not expect tech support for 5€?

How much would you think someone has to pay to get tech support then?

DigitalOcean or Linode.

Linode’s UI makes DigitalOcean look like dog shit. It’s amazing how slow and laggy DigitalOcean’s UI is.

Well, if everything is working, you just interact with the UI a single time for setup.

@Dakota
Lol that’s no excuse, it’s still fucking trash.

Lol it absolutely is. If they want to be a cheap hoster, they should use money where it is useful. Spending tons of money on a fancy frontend that no one uses very often, what’s the point? Idgaf how ugly it is as long as it’s usable. VPS hosts are for developers that need functionality and not some marketing dudes who need glitter blown into their butts.

Linode is just awesome in general.

Digital Ocean Droplet.

Hosting made for everyone | alwaysdata would give you Node.js, Python, PHP, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL, daily backups, email accounts, SSH access, SFTP, and 10GB storage.

I’m playing around with Swift/Vapor REST-API backends on Linux VPS.

I’m using ionos.de, a German hoster. Went with the XS package (1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10 GB SSD). Paying 12€ for a whole year (lol).

+10€ initial fee.

@Dakota
Not if you go for a yearly contract.
Also they have a fair use traffic flat.

I look forward to community suggestions, but I also suppose that you can get more for free than for $5. If the Oracle Free Tier fits your needs.

@Blakeley
DON’T rely on Oracle for production hosting. Always keep backup. Use it for your personal things. They’ll terminate or suspend your account without even asking/noticing you.
