Passion Project or Pointless? Need Your Thoughts on My Music App Idea

Hey all,
I’ve been dreaming of creating a music-centered social media app, kind of like Last.FM, Airbuds, or Musicboard. I know they already do a lot of this stuff, but I’m not doing it for money or recognition. I’m more interested in the practice, fun, and having a solid project for my portfolio. I’m really passionate about music and love the idea of sharing, organizing, and discussing it, so I’ve already started planning things out.

That said, I can’t help but wonder: even though it’s a passion project, is it worth pursuing if it’s not super original? I’m still excited about it, and my friends are down to work on it with me, but I’m starting to doubt whether it’ll end up being a pointless app that no one will care about. I’d be handling both the front and back end, so it’d be a major portfolio piece for me. What do you all think? Is it worth it, or should I move on to something else?

100% go for it! Even if it’s not totally original, working on something you love is never a waste of time. Plus, it sounds like a great way to showcase your skills for your portfolio. Most apps are built on similar concepts, but what matters is how you make yours unique. Plus, you’ll learn a ton from building it!

I wouldn’t worry about originality too much. Think about how many photo-sharing apps there are, or messaging apps. If your spin on it is cool, it’ll find its audience. Even if it’s a small one, it’s still a success! Plus, the experience you’ll gain from tackling both front and back end is invaluable

Yeah, I get the doubt, but remember that every passion project starts with someone thinking ‘is this worth it?’ It doesn’t have to blow up to be worthwhile. Also, this could end up being more original than you think once you start tweaking it. Sometimes the best ideas come from what wasn’t planned!

Don’t worry about if it’s ‘pointless.’ You’ll have fun, build something cool, and walk away with a killer portfolio piece. And let’s be real: most people who make apps don’t make the next Instagram or TikTok right away. Your app could still carve out a niche. Keep at it!

I think it’s worth it if you’re passionate about it. You’re not just making an app, you’re also developing your skills and showing potential employers/clients what you can do. Plus, even if it doesn’t take off, you’ll probably learn something that’ll help with your next project!
