Looks like GIPHY's API is no longer free

I wonder how Slack will handle this.

They’ll just pay. Not everyone here seems to understand how affordable this is for larger companies.

Didn’t Meta attempt to buy Giphy but were stopped due to antitrust issues? I wonder if Meta would have kept it free. Seems like they are now under pressure to be profitable instead of focusing on a potential sale.

Simple solution: just go back to the roots and download/upload the GIFs. You’ll be fine. :man_shrugging:

Wow.

But I assume they have some major “customers”, right? Almost every messaging app has Giphy integrated, like WhatsApp or Discord. Are they all using this API?

That’s who the pricing is aimed at.

They do, but I expect discounted rates for key clients.

Well, at least it’s a reasonable price /s

Considering their target market, I’m not bothered by this.

What bothers me is that their GIFs are low-quality now. Tenor is much better.

I wish I could just say switch to Tenor, no big deal. But then you remember how quickly Twitter, Reddit, and Apple jump on an idea. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tenor pulls the same stunt next year.

That’s why you should go with Tenor. It works really well.

It works really well.

For now.

Yeah, since it’s owned by Google, they have a tendency to randomly shut things down or impose outrageous fees (anyone remember the Google Maps API?).

@Cory
The Google Maps API debacle was truly awful. I switched to MapBox for that reason.

I guess there will be no more GIF button in any of the apps.

Looks like I have a new ticket to handle at work.

Looks like that company is finished.
