Concerned About an Online Assessment – Privacy Violation or Normal Practice?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in the hiring process with this company, and they’re asking me to take an online screening assessment through a third-party website. The test is over an hour long, and they require constant access to my webcam and screen, with random screenshots to make sure I’m not cheating.

I’m feeling super uncomfortable with this. Is this normal? It feels like an invasion of privacy, and I’m wondering if this is a red flag. Has anyone else experienced this?

It’s frustrating how common it’s become for people to use AI during applications and interviews. Normally, I’d agree it’s a red flag, but after what my company recently dealt with, I don’t think it’s that bad. Still, in-person interviews would definitely be better.

I’m thinking this is just a third-party system they’re using to screen candidates, so it’s likely that the company itself won’t even see the videos or screenshots—those are probably handled by the third-party service to verify everything.

That said, I could be wrong. Trust your gut and make the call that feels right to you. I’d consider it more of a yellow flag.

Red flag? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on how transparent they are about it. Did they give you a heads-up beforehand? Do they explain how the data is stored or used? If they’re not open about these things, I’d start asking some serious questions. Your privacy is important, no doubt!

This is pretty common for corporate job applications these days. Usually, you’ll get a coding assessment on sites like HackerRank or similar before moving forward in the process. The company can decide if they want the test to be with the camera on or off. It’s likely a data structure and algorithm test, but it could vary.
