Is Hijacking the cursor to display a moving advert a widespread thing these days? Or is this website just extra terrible

It looks extra terrible.

I opened it in both my browsers (Brave & Librewolf, both with lots of adblockers), and while I didn’t see that abomination, or most ads, the site is so bloated and unappealing I was taken back to the 2010 era of shady flash game sites.

I haven’t visited it for like 4-5 years, and recently saw mod.io, and when you compare the two, I can easily see why the latter overtook that dumpster fire of a site so quickly.

@Hollis
I clicked the Beta, and that was the part I was talking about.

The market is the same - players wanting to mod their games. Who the company gets its money from wasn’t the question here.

Overtook is maybe a strong word, but it’s definitely gaining momentum, and multiple games I actually played (and some more I heard about) have their mods there.

Obviously, Nexus is still more than alive, by virtue of being the oldest big player in the field.

Comparing its UI and UX to mods.io, though, that’s clearly not gonna last forever.

You’re talking about a website that has 50% screen space taken by ads in first view, go figure.

Thanks for raising this. We have brought it to the attention of our ad provider and will get it removed ASAP. This isn’t the kind of ad we want on our website. Please continue to report bad ads like this if you see them: How can I report bad ads? - Nexus Mods Site Help

@Perrin
Update: the advertiser responsible has been blocked and our provider is tracking down how this ad was allowed through. Thanks /u/Mediocre-Subject4867 for bringing it to our attention!

It’s still present for me. Based on the other comments others aren’t seeing it. Perhaps it’s related to geographic region or something.

@Tru
Can I ask what country you’re in, what browser you’re using, and what operating system?

I’m not sure you actually read the post you linked. It’s about a user who downloaded a virus which compromised their account. Not sure what you were reading but you do you.

@Perrin
You need to reduce ads entirely. That site is absolute garbage.

Servers cost money, storage costs money. The site hosts probably tens of thousands of mods and those files need to live somewhere.

The web devs in this very thread are humans that need to eat and have salaries to pay as well.

Do ads suck? Yep.

Have I also felt spammed with ads on Nexusmods? Yep.

Are they a business providing a public good for the community that costs money? Also yep.
